Synopsis The Royal Game
Vienna, 1938. The Nazis have just annexed Austria and notary Josef Bartok knows he is in grave danger. As he prepares to flee, he is arrested by the Gestapo and locked up in a hotel converted into a prison. He will only get out if he collaborates with the Nazis. Bartok is unwilling to give in. But isolated, loneliness begins to take its toll on him until he manages to steal a chess book, which will be his fulcrum for staying sane and turning resistance into a game.
Based on the world classic 'The Chess Novel', author Stefan Zweig's best-known book.
